Whiteville, NC  — Whiteville Police Chief Douglas Rockenbach says investigators remain confident that someone in the community has information that could help solve the killing of 71‑year‑old Cynthia Hansen.

“Someone knows something. Someone in our community has seen something,” Rockenbach said.

Hansen died on March 11 after being assaulted during the early‑morning hours inside her business, Stronger Body Fitness, in Whiteville. Police have described the case as a senseless killing – a violent death that, based on information released by authorities, appears to have occurred without a clear or identifiable motive.

Investigators have also confirmed that Hansen was able to speak briefly before she died and conveyed the name “Daniel.” Detectives have not said whether the name refers to a suspect, witness, acquaintance, or someone else connected to the case.

Police are still asking residents on the east side of Whiteville to continue reviewing any available security‑camera footage for unusual activity from the overnight and early‑morning hours.

A reward of $27,000 is now available for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case. The total includes a $25,000 state reward issued through official channels and a $2,000 local reward coordinated by Whiteville Police and private donors.

“We will continue to pursue this case relentlessly,” Rockenbach said.

Police continue to urge anyone with information, no matter how small it may seem, to come forward.
