Prosecutors outline three felony charges as investigators continue reviewing writings tied to the weekend attack.
BC NEWS BRIEF
Washington, DC — The man accused of opening fire outside the White House Correspondents’ Dinner made his first appearance in federal court Monday, where prosecutors outlined three felony charges tied to the weekend shooting that disrupted the high‑profile event.
Federal investigators identified the suspect as 31‑year‑old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California. Authorities say Allen traveled to Washington with multiple weapons, including a shotgun and a handgun, before approaching the security perimeter outside the Washington Hilton on Saturday night. One Secret Service agent was struck in the vest during the exchange of gunfire and is expected to recover.
During the brief hearing, Allen was informed of the charges against him, which include attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump, transporting a firearm across state lines with intent to commit a felony, and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. He did not enter a plea.
Court filings indicate investigators recovered writings and messages sent shortly before the shooting that referenced political grievances and listed potential targets. Prosecutors said additional charges may be added as the investigation continues.
A detention hearing is scheduled for April 30, followed by a preliminary hearing on May 11.
