Nakina, NC — A months‑long investigation sparked by community complaints led to the seizure of illegal gaming machines and the arrest of two men at a Nakina convenience store, according to the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office.
Detectives with the Special Operations Division’s Vice/Narcotics Unit launched the investigation after receiving multiple reports of suspected illegal electronic gaming at the Shop and Save Convenience Mart on Seven Creeks Highway. Undercover operations and surveillance were conducted over several weeks, ultimately providing enough evidence for a search warrant.
On Jan. 8, 2026, detectives executed that warrant at the business, seizing five illegal gaming machines and taking two individuals into custody.
Investigators also discovered a dead wildlife animal stored inside the store’s refrigerated walk‑in cooler. Columbus County Environmental Health Services responded to assess potential sanitation issues.
Arrests and Charges
Ali Shoqi Saleh was charged with:
- Operating Greater Than or Equal to 5 Video Gaming Machines (Felony)
- Operating/Possessing a Slot Machine
- Operating Video Gaming Machines
- Electronic Sweepstakes Violations
He received a $5,000 secured bond and was taken to the Columbus County Detention Center.
Ali Ahmed Hamdi Saleh was charged with:
- Operating Greater Than or Equal to 5 Video Gaming Machines (Felony)
- Operating/Possessing a Slot Machine
- Electronic Sweepstakes Violations
- Operating Video Gaming Machines
- Gambling
He was also given a $5,000 secured bond and transported to the detention center.
Investigation Ongoing
Detectives say the case remains active as they continue pursuing leads connected to illegal gaming operations across Columbus County.
Sheriff Bill Rogers credited residents for helping initiate the investigation, saying community involvement played a key role in the outcome. He noted that detectives spent “countless hours” conducting undercover work and surveillance to build the case.
