A U.S. Postal Service rule that took effect December 24, 2025, may affect how postmark dates appear on mail sent from Brunswick and Columbus counties. The rule clarifies that a postmark now reflects when mail is processed at a USPS facility, not when it is dropped off at a post office, mailbox, or collected by a carrier.
Because processing may occur later, especially with recent transportation change — items mailed on time could receive a postmark dated a day or more afterward. This would matter for tax documents, legal filings, and other paperwork that depends on a recorded mailing date.
To ensure Proof of Mailing the USPS recommends the following options for residents who need a clear, same‑day postmark:
- Request a manual postmark at the post office counter.
- Purchase a Certificate of Mailing for official proof of acceptance.
- Use Certified Mail or Registered Mail, which include dated receipts.
These services help verify when an item entered the postal system, even if the automated postmark is missing or delayed.
Local election officials say the rule will not affect absentee voting in North Carolina. State law now requires all absentee ballots to be received by 7:30 p.m. on Election Night, regardless of postmark. Voters can track their ballot through BallotTrax, which provides email, text, or voice updates once registered.
Residents mailing federal tax returns or other time‑sensitive documents are encouraged to send them well ahead of deadlines. USPS advises requesting a free manual postmark if the mailing date must be clearly recorded.
