State drought deepens: Raleigh enforces restrictions, Charlotte calls for restraint

Several regions in North Carolina have enacted water‑use restrictions as drought conditions deepen, with the most significant measures in the Raleigh metro area and the Charlotte region.

Mandatory Restrictions:
Raleigh and its partner municipalities are under mandatory Stage 1 restrictions. Stage 1 limits outdoor watering to assigned days. Restaurants may serve water only upon request, and hotels reduce laundry demand through linen‑reuse programs.

Voluntary Restrictions:
Charlotte and Mecklenburg County remain under voluntary conservation measures. Charlotte Water is asking residents to limit outdoor watering and avoid nonessential uses such as washing driveways.

Statewide Drought‑Triggered Rules
North Carolina Utilities Commission rules apply automatically to regulated water systems based on drought level, adding further limits in areas experiencing severe or extreme drought. Conservation encouraged statewide as drought officials are urging residents across North Carolina to reduce nonessential water use, even where no formal restrictions are in place.

Helpful steps include limiting lawn irrigation, shortening showers, fixing leaks, running dishwashers and washing machines only when full, and avoiding outdoor water use during peak heat. These voluntary measures help reduce strain on local systems and support drought recovery.
