Nationwide Recall Impacts North Carolina Pet Owners and Breeders Following Reports of Illness
FDA RECALL: Revival Animal Health of Orange City, Iowa, has initiated a voluntary recall of specific Breeder’s Edge® Foster Care® Canine and Shelter’s Choice® Canine Milk Replacers. The recall is due to inconsistent levels of Vitamin D, which have resulted in both dangerously low and elevated levels within certain batches.
The affected products were distributed nationwide through online platforms and retail pet stores. Consequently, the recall directly impacts consumers, animal shelters, and professional breeders across North Carolina and the surrounding coastal regions.
According to the FDA announcement, dogs ingesting elevated levels of Vitamin D may exhibit symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, frequent urination, excessive drooling, and weight loss. In severe cases, very high levels can lead to serious health complications, including renal dysfunction and kidney failure. Conversely, insufficient Vitamin D levels can lead to bone weakness and conditions such as rickets.
The recall includes the following products and packaging sizes:
-
Shelter’s Choice® Canine Milk Replacer: 1 lb, 3.5 lb, and 8 lb bags.
-
Breeder’s Edge® Foster Care® Canine: 12 oz jars; 4.5 lb, 18 lb, and 20 lb bags.
Consumers are urged to stop feeding these products to their dogs immediately. If a pet has consumed the affected milk replacer and is exhibiting any of the symptoms mentioned, owners should contact their veterinarian right away. Two reports of rickets have already been linked to this recall.
