Hospital staff and HonorBridge gathered April 1 to recognize organ, eye, and tissue donors and the lives they save

Whiteville, NC — Columbus Regional Healthcare System partnered with HonorBridge on April 1 for a Donate Life flag‑raising ceremony in recognition of National Donate Life Month. Staff, partners, and community members gathered for a moment of silence to honor organ, eye, and tissue donors, their families, transplant recipients, and the thousands still waiting.

The ceremony began at 10:08 a.m., a symbolic time chosen to represent that one organ donor can save up to eight lives.

As the region’s primary hospital and trauma‑care provider, Columbus Regional Healthcare System regularly supports families navigating critical, time‑sensitive medical decisions. CRHS works closely with HonorBridge – North Carolina’s federally designated organ procurement organization, to ensure that donation opportunities are handled with dignity, compassion, and clinical precision. Hospital leaders say events like Wednesday’s ceremony help reinforce the lifesaving impact of donation and the ongoing need for more registered donors.

Organ, eye, and tissue donation can save or improve dozens of lives. A single donor may restore sight to two people through corneal donation, help burn survivors through skin grafts, support mobility through bone and tendon donation, and provide lifesaving organs such as the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and pancreas. More than 100,000 people nationwide are currently waiting for a transplant, and thousands die each year before a match becomes available.
