Rehabbers advise keeping found babies warm and safe until storms pass; reunification with mother squirrels remains the goal

As strong winds continue across the region, wildlife rehabilitators are urging residents to watch for baby squirrels that may be blown from their nests. Bolduc’s Wildlife Rescue says that simple steps taken during the storm can help keep the animals safe until conditions improve.
Rehabbers advise contacting them immediately for guidance if baby squirrels are found on the ground. Until help arrives, the babies should be placed in a small box lined with a soft fleece blanket or T‑shirt. A heating pad set on low should be placed under half of the box to allow the animals to move away from the warmth if needed.
Rescuers stress that residents should not give the babies food or water, as this can cause aspiration and may be fatal. Pets and children should be kept away, and the box should remain warm, dark, and quiet.
Once the storm clears, rehabilitators will attempt to reunite the babies with their mother. If she survived the storm, they say she returns for her young about 90% of the time.
“Mom squirrels are the best possible caregivers, so reunification is always our goal,” the rescue noted.
