NORTH CAROLINA — The N.C. Forest Service is warning residents statewide of high to extreme fire danger today, citing conditions that could cause wildfires to ignite easily and spread rapidly. The advisory was issued early Tuesday morning as dry vegetation, low humidity, and active winds continue to elevate wildfire risk.
According to the Forest Service, fires can start “almost immediately” under current conditions, and spot fires—new fires ignited by wind‑carried embers—remain a constant threat. The agency urged residents to use extreme caution with any potential ignition source, including outdoor equipment, farm machinery, and discarded smoking materials.
Outdoor Burning Strongly Discouraged
While no statewide burn ban is currently in effect, the Forest Service emphasized that outdoor burning is strongly discouraged until conditions improve. Local restrictions may still apply, and residents are urged to check with their county ranger before burning.
A valid burning permit is still required for open burning, but officials stressed that “just because you can burn doesn’t mean you should.”
