Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Columbus County and Surrounding Areas

WILMINGTON, NC — The National Weather Service in Wilmington has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for portions of southeastern North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina, including Columbus, southeastern Robeson, and southwestern Bladen counties, until 12:45 p.m. Thursday, March 12.

At 11:59 a.m., radar detected a line of severe thunderstorms stretching from Sellers to Kingsburg to Trio, moving northeast at 55 mph. Forecasters say the storms are capable of producing 60 mph wind gusts, which may down trees and power lines.

Communities in the path of the storms include Whiteville, Tabor City, Chadbourn, Fair Bluff, Boardman, Bladenboro, Loris, Conway, Marion, Mullins, Pamplico, Hemingway, and surrounding areas.

The warning also notes tornadoes are possible, as rotation can develop quickly within fast‑moving storm lines.

What Residents Should Do in case of a Tornado
• Move immediately to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building.
• Stay away from windows.
• Be prepared to act quickly if a Tornado Warning is issued.
• Report hail or wind damage to the National Weather Service in Wilmington at 1.800.697.3901

Emergency managers continue to emphasize having more than one way to receive alerts, especially during rapidly evolving severe weather.
