As North Carolina prepares to observe Arbor Day on March 20, several communities in the southeastern region are being highlighted for their work in urban forestry, tree planting, and long‑term environmental stewardship.

The N.C. Forest Service announced this year’s Tree City USA and Tree Campus Higher Education honorees, a national recognition program that rewards municipalities and schools for meeting key standards in tree care, planning, and public engagement. While the statewide list includes dozens of cities and campuses, the program continues to grow in Columbus and Brunswick counties, where local governments and schools have expanded tree‑planting efforts and community education programs.

Local forestry officials say the recognitions matter because they help communities secure grants, strengthen storm‑resilience planning, and promote healthier public spaces. The designations also support long‑term goals such as reducing heat‑island effects, improving water quality, and increasing canopy coverage in fast‑growing coastal areas.

Arbor Day in North Carolina is observed on the first Friday after March 15, which falls on March 20 this year. Municipalities, schools, and civic groups across the region are planning tree‑planting events, educational programs, and volunteer activities throughout the month.

The N.C. Forest Service encourages residents to participate in local Arbor Day events and to support community forestry programs that help maintain the region’s natural character.
