Two‑week testing period aims to identify leaks and improve sewer system performance
LAKE WACCAMAW, NC — The Town of Lake Waccamaw will begin smoke testing of the sanitary sewer system starting March 10, with work continuing over the following two weeks in various areas of the lake community.
The routine testing helps the town identify leaks, breaks, and improper connections in sewer lines so crews can maintain and improve the system.
What residents may see during testing is white or gray smoke coming from:
– Roof vents
– Manholes
– The ground above sewer lines
In some cases, smoke may enter homes or buildings through plumbing fixtures or floor drains if traps are dry or not properly sealed.
Town officials note that the smoke used in testing is:
– Non‑toxic
– Non‑staining
– Not a fire hazard
– May have a noticeable odor
To reduce the chance of smoke entering a home, residents are encouraged to:
– Pour a bucket of water into any unused sinks, tubs, showers, or floor drains to ensure traps are filled
– Check that plumbing fixtures are properly sealed
If smoke does enter a home, it may indicate a dry drain or plumbing issue.
