OLD DOCK — The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a series of illegal dumping incidents along Big Island Road after receiving multiple complaints from residents in the Old Dock community.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, trash has been discarded both on private property and along the public roadway. Deputies say the debris includes household garbage, construction materials and other discarded items, creating safety hazards and harming the appearance of the surrounding area.
To address the problem, the Sheriff’s Office has installed signs and placed surveillance cameras in the affected locations in an effort to identify those responsible. Cleanup crews from the State Misdemeanor Confinement Program (SMCP) have also been deployed to remove the dumped materials.
Sheriff Bill Rogers emphasized that illegal dumping will not be tolerated and encouraged residents to report any suspicious activity.
“If you witness anyone disposing of trash unlawfully, please report it immediately,” the Sheriff’s Office said in its announcement.
Residents can report illegal dumping by:
- Calling the Sheriff’s Office at 910‑642‑6551
- Submitting an anonymous tip through the Sheriff’s Office mobile app
- Filing a report online at www.columbussheriff.com
Officials say all reports can remain anonymous.
The Sheriff’s Office thanked community members for their cooperation, noting that public awareness and vigilance play a key role in keeping Columbus County clean and safe.
