Board hears annual mental health commission report; appoints liaisons; tables department name change
By BC News Staff Writer
Brunswick County Commissioners worked through a focused agenda Monday evening, receiving updates on public health initiatives, wastewater planning, and administrative matters during their February 16 meeting.
Commissioners first heard the annual update from the Substance Use, Addiction, and Mental Health Commission. The presentation, delivered by Health Services staff, required no action and is available for public viewing through the county’s Agendas and Minutes Portal.
In administrative business, the Board unanimously appointed Chairman Mike Forte and Vice Chairman Marty Cooke to serve as liaisons to the City of Boiling Spring Lakes’ newly formed Wastewater Committee. The city requested county participation as it begins work on wastewater planning and coordination.
Commissioners also voted unanimously to table a proposal to rename the Code Administration Department to the Building Safety Department. Members said additional time is needed to research the use of “Building Safety” as a department name and to consider related implications before moving forward.
Staff provided further updates on two ongoing topics: the proposed Fire Services Agreement and matters involving the NC Department of Environmental Quality related to sewer issues. No action was taken following the briefing.
The Board’s next scheduled meeting is Monday, March 2 at 3:00 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.
