Several statewide laws took effect January 1, bringing changes that will affect schools, families, healthcare, and local businesses in Brunswick and Columbus counties.
Gender Identification: House Bill 805 now requires all state documents to list sex strictly as male or female based on biological sex at birth. The law also blocks state funding for gender transition care for minors and individuals in state custody.
School Cell Phone Ban: All public schools in both counties must enforce a statewide ban on student cell phone use during the school day, including restrictions on social media access.
Prescription Drug Transparency: Under the SCRIPT Act, drug manufacturers must report price increases over 15% for certain medications. A new state portal will track drug prices for consumers.
Driver’s License Renewals: Residents can now renew licenses more frequently online, by mail, or by phone, reducing the need for in‑person DMV visits.
Adoptive Birth Certificates: Senate Bill 248 streamlines the process for adoptive parents and adopted individuals to request updated birth certificates.
Hemp‑Derived Products: A separate law may make most hemp‑derived products, including Delta‑8, illegal by November 2026, potentially affecting local retailers and wellness businesses.
With these laws now active, residents and businesses across Brunswick and Columbus counties are entering 2026 with a wide range of new regulations to navigate. Schools, pharmacies, government offices, and local industries are expected to spend the coming months adapting to the changes and preparing for additional updates later in the year.
