SUNSET BEACH — More than 300 guests filled the Sea Trail Convention Center on February 7 to celebrate a decade of generosity, community spirit, and student success at the 10th Annual Bella Italia Gala, hosted by The Foundation of Brunswick Community College.
The milestone evening blended fine dining with heartfelt storytelling, all centered on one mission: expanding opportunities for BCC students.

BCC President Gene Smith opened the event by welcoming supporters who have helped shape the gala into one of the college’s most impactful traditions. He was joined by Foundation Executive Director Teresa Nelson and Brunswick County Commissioner Mike Forte, who also serves as President of the Foundation Board of Directors. Together, they reflected on ten years of scholarships, mentorships, and life‑changing support made possible through donor generosity.
But the most memorable moments came from the students themselves. BCC Student Ambassadors Joseph Heiligenthaler and Patrice Beasley shared personal stories about how scholarships and Foundation programs have helped them overcome challenges and stay focused on their goals. Their testimonies underscored the real‑world impact of every contribution.

“The Bella Italia Gala is a celebration of the partnership between The Foundation, our generous donors, and the students and community we serve,” Nelson said. “Together, we’re making dreams come true every day in the form of scholarships, travel abroad opportunities, mentorships, and help when unexpected challenges arise. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing a student succeed.”
Guests enjoyed a five‑course Italian dinner paired with wines, creating an elegant culinary experience that has become a hallmark of the annual event. This year’s gala was supported by Presenting Sponsors Dinah E. Gore, Myong and Paul Jensen, and Teresa McLamb, along with numerous additional sponsors and community partners.

Over the past decade, the Bella Italia Gala has grown into more than a signature evening — it has become a driving force behind student achievement at Brunswick Community College. Funds raised have strengthened academic programs, expanded scholarship opportunities, and provided critical support for students facing unexpected hardships.
As the Foundation looks ahead, leaders say the next decade promises even greater impact.
