Jury finds Jamal Terrel Griggs guilty in the shooting death of Shelton Long
A New Hanover County jury has convicted Jamal Terrel Griggs, 32, of Kinston, in the 2021 shooting death of Shelton Long, a Riegelwood resident. Long was found in his vehicle on River Road in Wilmington with three gunshot wounds on November 5, 2021.
Griggs was found guilty of first‑degree murder, discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, and possession of a firearm by a felon. He received a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole.
Evidence at trial included shell casings, witness accounts, surveillance footage, and cell‑site data placing Griggs near the scene.
