A recent structure fire demonstrates how a closed bedroom door can dramatically reduce smoke and heat damage

Horry County, SC — Horry County Fire Rescue is urging families to adopt a simple nightly habit that can dramatically improve survival during a house fire: close bedroom doors before going to sleep.

The reminder comes after a recent structure fire where firefighters documented a striking contrast between two rooms ~ one heavily damaged by heat and smoke, the other largely protected because the bedroom door had been shut.

Fire safety research shows that a closed door can reduce both temperature and carbon monoxide levels to about one‑tenth of what they would be with an open door. That difference can slow fire spread, limit toxic exposure, and give residents critical extra minutes to escape.
Horry County Fire Rescue emphasizes that “close before you doze” is more than a catchy phrase. It’s a key component of an effective home emergency plan, especially when paired with practiced escape routes and working smoke alarms.
Fire spreads quickly, but preparation and small habits save lives.
