Can You Vote? NC State Election Board Sending Out ID‑Validation Letters

USPS Election Mail (USPS Website)

More than 241,000 North Carolina voters will receive notices

The North Carolina State Board of Elections is mailing letters to more than 241,000 voters whose identification numbers did not validate during the registration process, part of a statewide effort to improve the accuracy of voter records.

According to state election officials, the notices are being sent to voters whose driver’s license numbers, the last four digits of their Social Security numbers, or name information did not match other government databases at the time of registration. The Board emphasized that the letters do not affect a voter’s registration status.

Voters who receive a letter remain fully registered and will be able to cast a regular ballot in upcoming elections. Officials said the outreach is intended to help voters update their information and ensure records are complete and consistent across state systems.

The mailing is part of the Board’s ongoing voter‑roll maintenance work, including the Registration Repair Project, which focuses on correcting missing or mismatched ID numbers.

The State Board has not released county‑level totals, so the number of affected voters in Brunswick and Columbus counties is not publicly available. Local election offices can assist voters who have questions about their registration or need to update identifying information.

Voters may update their information by providing a valid driver’s license number or the last four digits of their Social Security number to their county board of elections. Name corrections can also be made at the county level.
