Valve failure caused 34,650‑gallon overflow; site repaired and environmental sampling completed
Brunswick County Public Utilities reported a discharge of untreated wastewater on January 28, 2026, after a sewer line tap failed near 101 South Middleton Drive in Calabash. The sanitary sewer overflow was discovered at approximately 1:12 p.m., prompting an immediate response from county utility staff.
An investigation determined that a two‑inch sewer tap gate valve had failed, resulting in the release of wastewater. Repair work began at 1:30 p.m. and was completed by 2:15 p.m. the same afternoon.
County officials estimate that approximately 34,650 gallons of untreated wastewater were discharged and reached the Little Cawcaw Swamp. Downstream sampling and remediation of the affected area have been completed.
This notice is issued in accordance with NC General Statutes Article 21, Chapter 143.215.1C.
Officials report that no public action is required at this time. Additional updates will be provided if conditions change.
