Bolivia, NC — Sunset Harbor & Zion Hill Volunteer Fire Department officials say a 25% increase in fire fees was necessary to maintain reliable fire protection and emergency response services throughout the district. The adjustment, approved by the Fire Fee Oversight Committee and the Brunswick County Commissioners, will take effect in the upcoming billing cycle.
Fire Chief Kurtis S. Reinert said the department has faced rising costs across nearly every area of operations in recent years. Equipment replacement, apparatus maintenance, protective gear, training requirements, and emergency medical supplies have all increased in price.
At the same time, call volume continues to grow as the community expands, placing additional demand on firefighters and available resources.
According to the department, the fee adjustment ensures critical equipment remains safe and modern, response times stay fast and dependable, staffing levels remain adequate for both fire and medical emergencies, and the district can continue meeting state and national safety standards.
Reinert said the decision was made carefully, noting that any fee change affects household budgets. He emphasized that the department remains committed to transparency and responsible financial management while maintaining the level of service residents expect and deserve.
