CDC confirms one illness in North Carolina and one in South Carolina; investigators say outbreak strain extends beyond recalled Texas‑produced eggs

Federal health officials say North Carolina and South Carolina are included in the current salmonella outbreak, even though neither state received any of the recalled eggs tied to the investigation. CDC’s latest update lists 98 illnesses across 17 states, including one case in North Carolina and one in South Carolina, with 26 hospitalizations and no deaths.
The recall involves 1.6 million dozen eggs produced by Midwest Poultry Services in Texas, marked with plant codes P‑1950 or 0840962 and Julian dates 157–184. FDA records show distribution only to Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana, with retail availability limited to Kroger and Brookshire Grocery stores in those states and nearby regions. No recalled eggs were sold in the Carolinas, and no Walmart stores were involved.
CDC says the Carolinas’ illnesses reflect the fact that the outbreak strain is not confined to the recalled egg supply chain. Some infections occurred months before the recalled eggs were produced, and investigators note that “recalled eggs do not explain all illnesses.” Whole‑genome sequencing confirms a shared strain across all cases, suggesting additional food sources or supply chains may be contributing.
Consumers are advised to check egg cartons for plant codes P‑1950 or 0840962 and discard any matching products. Symptoms of salmonella include fever, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and dehydration, with medical care recommended for young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.
