City of Whiteville enacts its own voluntary alert; Columbus County has not issued a countywide order
BLADEN COUNTY, NC — Bladen County officials have issued a Stage 1 voluntary water conservation advisory, asking customers to reduce usage by 5% as drought conditions continue to tighten across southeastern North Carolina.
The county said the move is a precaution meant to ease demand early and help avoid stricter measures if the dry pattern persists.
The advisory encourages residents to limit outdoor irrigation to no more than an inch per week, avoid watering pavement or hard surfaces, use spring‑loaded shutoff nozzles on hoses, and run dishwashers and washing machines only when full. Officials also urged customers to repair leaks quickly and rely on deeper, less frequent watering to reduce overall consumption.
While Bladen County is now under a countywide conservation request, neighboring Columbus County has not issued a similar countywide order. The City of Whiteville, however, has enacted its own Stage 1 voluntary water shortage alert, asking residents to cut usage by 10% as drought conditions intensify there.
No other municipalities in Columbus County have announced conservation measures.
