Senator urges Congress to ‘stop dicking around’ as 17 Democrats reintroduce CAOA
Washington, DC — U.S. Sen. John Fetterman (D‑Pa.) is again urging Congress to move on federal marijuana reform, backing a newly reintroduced bill that would fully legalize cannabis nationwide and align federal law with what most states already allow.
The Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act was filed Thursday with 17 co‑sponsors – all Democrats. The measure would remove marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act, establish federal regulatory standards, set impaired‑driving rules, expand research requirements, and create a national framework for production, labeling, and retail sales.
Fetterman’s office issued a press release supporting the bill’s return, saying he’s long believed cannabis should be “legal, safe, and regulated.”
“I’ve always been very pro‑weed,” Fetterman said. “In a very libertarian slant — I’m not going to judge anyone for using it to knock the edge off of life. Your path to wellness should be without judgment or punishment. Legal, safe, and regulated.”
He also urged Congress to “stop dicking around and make weed legal,” arguing federal prohibition is out of step with state policy. Twenty‑four states now allow recreational marijuana, and 35 states permit medical use.
The bill faces steep odds in the current Congress, where no Republicans have signed on. Supporters say the growing number of states with legal cannabis underscores the need for a unified national system.
