Columbus, Bladen, Brunswick, New Hanover, and surrounding counties will coordinate routes and consolidate services to expand access to medical care, shopping, and essential destinations under a new statewide transit initiative.
RALEIGH, NC — The N.C. Department of Transportation’s Integrated Mobility Division has announced a new round of Coordinated Public Transportation (ConCPT) projects aimed at improving mobility and strengthening regional transit networks across the state. Sixteen projects were selected for funding, including several that will directly reshape transportation services in southeastern North Carolina.
A major initiative will link Columbus County and Bladen County through a shared trip‑coordination model. Under the plan, both counties will jointly schedule transportation into Brunswick, New Hanover, Robeson, and Cumberland counties.
The approach is designed to reduce duplicative routes while expanding access to medical facilities, shopping centers, and other essential destinations. Transit officials say the partnership will allow both counties to pool resources, streamline operations, and offer more reliable service for riders who depend on public transportation for healthcare, employment, and daily needs.
Another significant project focuses on New Hanover County, where WAVE Transit and county‑managed transportation services will be consolidated into a unified operating structure. The coordinated model is expected to improve efficiency, align staffing and resources, and strengthen ADA‑compliant medical transportation throughout the Cape Fear region.
The restructuring marks one of the most substantial changes to New Hanover County’s transit system in recent years, with an emphasis on improving reliability for riders with mobility challenges.
State transportation officials say the full slate of ConCPT projects reflects a broader commitment to building more connected and accessible transit options statewide. By supporting regional partnerships and modernizing service models, NCDOT aims to increase mobility, support economic opportunity, and improve quality of life for residents across North Carolina.
