Myrtle Beach, SC — Myrtle Beach Police have arrested a 37‑year‑old man who now faces several charges after officers say a vehicle break‑in near a beach access led to a chase and an attempted theft of an occupied car at a gas station.
Police were first called to the 5th Avenue North beach access after a couple reported their vehicle had been entered and personal items were missing, including credit cards.
While speaking with police, the victims received alerts showing their stolen credit cards were being used at a Walmart on Seaboard Street. Officers went to the store and located the suspect, identified as Ahmet Erdinc Atansay, inside.
Investigators say Atansay ran from officers and headed toward a nearby gas station, got into the driver’s seat of a vehicle parked at a pump, while owner was fueling the car. Two passengers, including a juvenile were inside at the time. Officers reached the car and removed Atansay.
He was taken into custody and booked into J. Reuben Long Detention Center. Charges listed include breaking into a motor vehicle, financial transaction card theft, financial transaction card fraud, shoplifting, resisting arrest, and carjacking related to the attempted theft of the occupied vehicle.
The investigation remains ongoing.
All individuals are presumed innocent unless found guilty in a court of law.
