HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATION DONATES $100,000 TO SOUTHEASTERN COMMUNITY COLLEGE TECHNICAL PROGRAMS

Whiteville, NC — The Columbus County Home Builders Association has made a major investment in the future of local trades education, donating $100,000 to Southeastern Community College to support technical programs and workforce development.

The check presentation took place July 7 in SCC’s construction classroom, where association president Bill Worley said the gift is meant to help students build successful careers in construction and related fields. “I’ve always enjoyed the construction business, and I’ve been in it since 1972,” Worley said. “If this donation can help a student turn on that light, build a business, hire a few guys and be successful, it’s worth it.”

For the past five years, the association has awarded scholarships to graduates at each Columbus County high school. With a surplus in funds, members voted to expand their support through this donation to SCC while continuing the scholarship program.

SCC President Dr. Chris English thanked the association for its commitment to local workforce training. The funds will be divided among the college’s technical programs — Building Construction Technology, HVAC Technology, Welding Technology, and Electrical Engineering Technology — to purchase new materials, equipment, and safety gear.

“This truly means so much to this college and what we’re trying to do in the trades programs,” English said. “It will help support that next generation of skilled tradesmen in Columbus County.”

SCC Foundation Executive Director Terrie Priest and Board Chair Nathan Moore also praised the contribution, calling it a vital boost to maintaining SCC’s industry‑standard training facilities and preparing students for high‑demand careers.
