Investigators report the bus was traveling too fast for the curve, causing it to overturn.
LELAND, NC — A school bus driver has been charged following Wednesday’s rollover crash on the westbound U.S. 74 exit ramp from northbound U.S. 17, according to the Leland Police Department.
Investigators determined the bus was traveling down the exit ramp toward westbound U.S. 74 when it entered a curve at a speed higher than recommended. The vehicle left the roadway, overturned, and came to rest on its roof, partially in the travel lane.
The crash happened shortly after 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. The bus was carrying members of the Douglas Byrd High School football team from Fayetteville after a 7‑on‑7 event at South Brunswick High School.
There were 33 people on board, including 26 students and seven adults. Four individuals, two students and two adults were taken by ambulance for treatment of non‑life‑threatening injuries. All have since been released from the hospital.
Annette Blount, 57, of Linden, N.C., has been charged with reckless driving with wanton disregard and exceeding a safe speed.
The investigation is ongoing.
