(UPDATE) 300 Acre Active Wild Fires and Traffic Closures

UPDATE: Friday July 10 at approximately 10:00 p.m. the Old Georgetown Road / Hale Swamp Road wild fire is 300 acres and 60% contained.

Shallotte, NC — Civietown Fire & Rescue and emergency crews are currently responding to multiple woods and brush fires in the area.

Active fire activity has been reported in the Shallotte Point area and near Green Swamp Rd in Supply. Residents in these areas may notice heavy smoke and are advised not to be alarmed, though you should remain cautious of your surroundings.

Traffic Alert: Old Georgetown Road

The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office has issued a traffic alert regarding a road closure on a portion of Old Georgetown Road. The closure is due to ongoing fire activity and significantly reduced visibility caused by heavy smoke in the area.

Public Safety Recommendations

Avoid the Area: Please steer clear of the Old Georgetown Road vicinity to allow fire and emergency personnel the space they need to operate safely.
Use Alternate Routes: Plan your travel ahead of time to avoid the closure.
Visibility Warning: If you are driving in areas impacted by smoke, please slow down, stay alert, and exercise extreme caution. Never attempt to drive through heavy, low-visibility smoke.

The N.C. Forest Service has confirmed that crews are actively engaged on the wildfire near Old Georgetown Road and Hale Swamp Road, with additional fire departments assisting on scene. Smoke continues to impact visibility in the surrounding area, and motorists are urged to use caution or avoid the vicinity so responders can operate safely. Officials emphasize that conditions remain fluid and may change quickly. Residents should monitor updates from local public safety agencies.

The N.C. Forest Service also reminds the public that flying a drone near or over a wildfire is illegal in North Carolina, as low‑flying firefighting aircraft must be able to operate without interference.
