Clinic regains ability to serve low‑income patients after federal ban expires
Myrtle Beach, SC — Medicaid funding has resumed at the Planned Parenthood health center in Myrtle Beach, restoring access to cancer screenings, STI testing, contraception, and other preventive services that were unavailable to Medicaid patients for nearly a year.
The change took effect July 5, immediately after the expiration of a one‑year federal prohibition that blocked Medicaid reimbursements to Planned Parenthood and a small number of other nonprofit providers. Congress did not extend the ban, allowing billing to restart automatically.
During the cutoff, Medicaid patients in the Grand Strand lost access to key services unless they paid out‑of‑pocket. The Myrtle Beach clinic does not provide abortions under South Carolina law, but it is a major provider of reproductive and preventive healthcare, including STI treatment in a county with some of the highest rates in the state.
The clinic is also the closest Planned Parenthood location for many Columbus County residents who travel to Myrtle Beach for care. No Planned Parenthood sites operate inside Brunswick or Columbus counties.
With Medicaid billing restored, the Myrtle Beach center can again serve eligible patients at no cost, reestablishing a critical healthcare option for the region’s low‑income residents.
