BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC — A group of Brunswick County residents has initiated legal action against the Town of Leland, alleging in a recent filing that the town moved forward with several residential and mixed-use development approvals without adhering to required state and local procedures.

The complaint, filed in Brunswick County Superior Court, challenges a series of rezonings and site-plan decisions along Leland’s northern growth corridor. In the document, plaintiffs claim the town conducted hearings and votes without providing sufficient public notice. Furthermore, the suit alleges the town failed to perform updated traffic and stormwater analyses, arguing that these oversights violate North Carolina’s municipal planning statutes.

The residents contend that these approvals have accelerated development to a level that outpaces current infrastructure capacity, specifically citing concerns regarding roadway congestion, drainage system performance, and emergency-service coverage. The filing also emphasizes claims that the town failed to assess how these projects would affect neighboring communities located outside of Leland’s municipal limits, where residents report they are already experiencing increased runoff and traffic issues.

Through this lawsuit, the plaintiffs are seeking to have the contested approvals invalidated, asking the court to require new, compliant hearings and updated impact studies before additional permits are issued. The filing also includes a request for an injunction to pause construction on the disputed projects while the legal matter is resolved.

Town officials have not yet filed a formal response in court, and the allegations remain unproven. A representative for the Town of Leland did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

This case underscores a period of heightened land-use tension in northern Brunswick County, where the pace of growth continues to generate conflict between municipal leaders, developers, and area residents.
