Decision Shifts Historic‑District Oversight to City Staff

By Coastal Carolina News Staff Writer

Southport, NC — Southport has dissolved its Historic Preservation Commission, ending decades of citizen‑led review of historic‑district changes and shifting all responsibilities to city staff.

Southport’s historic districts encompass some of the city’s oldest residential and commercial areas, known for 19th‑ and early‑20th‑century architecture, coastal cottages, and preserved streetscapes. The districts were established to protect the city’s architectural character and ensure that exterior changes—such as paint colors, windows, porches, and siding—align with longstanding preservation standards. For years, the Historic Preservation Commission served as the public body interpreting those standards and guiding homeowners through required reviews.

With the commission dissolved, Planning & Inspections and the Board of Aldermen now handle all preservation reviews. City officials say the streamlined structure may shorten approval timelines, but some residents worry the loss of a citizen board reduces public input and narrows the forum for preservation concerns.

Homeowners in historic districts will have exterior modifications reviewed directly by staff. Existing rules remain in place, though their interpretation now rests solely with municipal leadership.

Without the commission, residents must raise preservation concerns during general public‑comment periods. Advocates say the former board provided consistency and neighborhood context that helped shape Southport’s preservation identity.

Developers may see more predictable timelines, though broader interpretations of guidelines are possible without specialized oversight. City officials have not said whether a new advisory group will be formed.

For now, Planning & Inspections manages all reviews, and any ordinance changes will go through the Board of Aldermen. Residents seeking guidance should contact city staff.
