ROANOKE RAPIDS — Two young people from Columbus County were shot and killed Monday afternoon in Roanoke Rapids, and a third local teen was briefly detained after fleeing the scene, according to Roanoke Rapids Police.

Police identified the victims as Mariah Thompson, 15, of Whiteville, and Patrick Shane Faircloth, 20, of the Chadbourn area. Both were fatally wounded in the area of Vance Street and West Eleventh Street.

A third occupant of the vehicle, Isaiah Cooper, 19, of Whiteville, was uninjured. A Roanoke Rapids officer in the area at the time of the shooting saw Cooper’s vehicle speeding away from the scene. Cooper was stopped a short distance away, detained, questioned, and later released, investigators said.

Police said the group had traveled to Roanoke Rapids so Thompson could visit her boyfriend. No suspect information has been released, and investigators have not announced any arrests.

Faircloth, a 2025 graduate of Whiteville High School, was well‑known in the local custom truck community. A “Final Ride” memorial event is planned for Friday at 7 p.m. at the Whiteville Walmart, where Faircloth’s truck will be displayed.
