Conway, SC — The Horry County Police Department is now accepting applications for its upcoming Citizens Police Academy, a twelve‑week educational program designed to strengthen community relationships and give residents a clearer understanding of how local law enforcement operates. The academy meets Monday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and while two absences are permitted, the department encourages full participation due to the hands‑on nature of the sessions.
The program focuses on transparency and public understanding rather than law‑enforcement certification. Participants are not trained to perform police duties; instead, they receive an inside look at patrol operations, investigations, traffic enforcement, community policing, and the broader criminal justice system.
The department describes the academy as an opportunity for residents to see how decisions are made and why certain procedures exist.
The selection process follows the same equal‑opportunity standards applied throughout county government. Applicants are considered without regard to race, religion, color, national origin, sex, age, political affiliation, or disability.
The department also states it will make reasonable modifications to ensure individuals with disabilities have equal access to the program and its activities.
The application requires participants to certify that the information they provide is accurate and to acknowledge that incomplete or false submissions may result in rejection. By applying, residents authorize the department to review the information for evaluation purposes.
Applications are available through the Horry County Police Department at 2560 North Main Street, Suite 7, Conway.
