Department reminds visitors and residents that LSVs must be registered, insured, and street‑legal to operate or park at public accesses
OCEAN ISLE BEACH, NC — Police in Ocean Isle Beach are stepping up enforcement on Low‑Speed Vehicles (LSVs) this week, booting carts that are not properly registered, insured, or equipped to meet North Carolina’s street‑legal requirements. The department says the violations are most commonly found at public beach accesses and on town roadways.
Under North Carolina law, all LSVs must be registered in the owner’s state of residence, display a valid license plate, and carry current inspection and insurance. Officers say many of the vehicles being booted are missing one or more of these required items.
To qualify as “street legal,” an LSV must be equipped with headlamps, brake lights, turn signals, tail lamps, reflectors, a parking brake, rearview mirrors, a windshield, seat belts, and a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). These requirements fall under G.S. 20‑50 (registration) and G.S. 20‑309 (insurance).
Police also remind drivers that LSVs may only be operated on public streets with a posted speed limit of 35 miles per hour or less.
Town officials say the enforcement effort is aimed at improving safety during the busy summer season, when golf carts and LSVs are heavily used by visitors.
