Horry County Police coordinated with Pennsylvania investigators to take Betty Jane Adams into custody.

Myrtle Beach, SC — A Myrtle Beach woman is now facing homicide charges in Pennsylvania after being arrested last month by the Horry County Police Department (HCPD) on a sealed out‑of‑state warrant.
Betty Jane Adams, 60, was taken into custody on May 18 in the Myrtle Beach area after Pennsylvania authorities secured a warrant in connection with the 2015 killing of a Middlesex Township man whose death was initially reported as a suicide.
According to officials, the arrest was the result of coordinated work between HCPD, the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office, and Pennsylvania State Police, who traveled to South Carolina once the warrant was issued. The warrant remained sealed until the arrest to prevent flight risk.
Adams had been living in the Myrtle Beach area for several years, according to Pennsylvania authorities, though officials have not said why she relocated to South Carolina.
Adams waived extradition shortly after being taken into custody in Horry County. She was then transported to Pennsylvania and booked into the Cumberland County Prison, where she is being held without bail.
Cumberland County District Attorney Seán M. McCormack said the charges stem from the May 1, 2015, death of 68‑year‑old John Wesley Alleman, who was found with a gunshot wound inside the home he shared with Adams. His death was initially reported as a suicide, but the county coroner ruled it a homicide four days later.
Investigators allege that forensic evidence contradicts Adams’ original account of the shooting. Court filings also reference prior attempts by Adams to solicit harm against Alleman months before his death. McCormack said the investigation “remains ongoing.”
Adams is charged with first‑degree murder and third‑degree murder.
Her arraignment is scheduled for August 10, and her first court date is set for October in Cumberland County Court, Pennsylvania.
