The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office reports that Eric Martin Jr. was taken into custody by the Wake County Sheriff’s Office on the morning of July 4, 2026
CCSO expressed appreciation to all assisting agencies involved in the multi‑county effort to locate and apprehend Martin.

Authorities Identify Murder Suspect in June 2026 Fatal Shooting on Berry Lane

Whiteville, NC — On June 11, 2026, patrol deputies with the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported gunshot wound at 95 Berry Lane in Whiteville. Upon arrival, deputies located the victim, Raphael Gowans, who was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Investigators with the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office responded and identified 18-year-old Eric Martin Jr. as the suspect.
Martin is currently wanted on outstanding warrants for first-degree murder.
