Eleventh year of Milkweed for Monarchs supports residents in creating butterfly habitat
COLUMBIA, SC — The South Carolina Wildlife Federation has completed the mailing of 5,000 packets of native milkweed seeds to residents across the state, marking the eleventh year of its Milkweed for Monarchs Program. The annual effort provides free packets of Common, Swamp, and Butterfly Milkweed, giving households an accessible way to support monarch butterflies and other native pollinators.
Program organizers say the initiative continues to strengthen habitat corridors by increasing the availability of host plants, critical vegetation where monarchs lay eggs and caterpillars feed. Residents who receive seeds are encouraged to plant them in sunny, undisturbed areas to help expand habitat statewide.
SCWF also invites participants to share photos of monarchs spotted in their yards. Images may be emailed to mail@scwf.org.
