Piedmont Natural Gas says maintenance near East Moore Street is routine; residents advised not to mistake activity for an emergency

SOUTHPORT, NC — Piedmont Natural Gas is conducting scheduled maintenance near 1600 East Moore Street, and residents should expect a visible flare, venting noise, and a noticeable natural‑gas odor through June 12, according to the company’s public advisory.

The work, which began June 3, involves the controlled release and burning of natural gas as crews perform routine system maintenance. A temporary flare stack has been installed at the site, producing a tall flame that may be visible from surrounding neighborhoods and roadways.

Company officials emphasized that the activity is not an emergency and is part of standard safety procedures. The odor of natural gas, which is added to the product to make leaks easier to detect, is expected during the venting process.

Piedmont Natural Gas noted that the schedule could shift depending on weather conditions, but as of Wednesday no changes have been announced. The company issued the advisory to prevent unnecessary 911 calls and to reassure residents who may see or smell the activity.

The maintenance work will continue daily until the June 12 completion date.
