Leland Police Preparing to Enforce Updated Animal Ordinance

Town of Leland

New ordinance sets limits based on property size, animal type, and enclosure standards

LELAND, NC — The Town of Leland is reminding residents that updated regulations governing poultry, livestock, and wild animals within Town limits will take effect June 1. The Leland Police Department will begin issuing citations to property owners who are not in compliance with the revised ordinance.

The changes, adopted by Town Council earlier this year, establish clearer restrictions on the types and number of animals allowed based on property size. The ordinance also outlines new requirements for the placement, construction, and size of enclosures.

Residents can review the full ordinance, including definitions, enclosure standards, and parcel‑size requirements.

Town officials say the updates are intended to address recurring concerns related to noise, sanitation, public health, and neighborhood impacts, while also supporting the humane care of animals kept on residential properties.

Residents, businesses, and visitors are encouraged to review the updated rules and report recurring violations. Questions or reports of ongoing issues may be directed to the Leland Police Department at 910.371.1100
