Multiple departments provide tanker, ladder, and on‑scene support during early‑morning blaze

WHITEVILLE, NC — The North Whiteville Volunteer Fire Department responded to a major residential structure fire on Business 701 North in the early‑morning hours of May 24, prompting a large multi‑agency effort to contain the blaze and protect surrounding properties.

North Whiteville crews arrived to find a heavily involved structure fire and immediately requested mutual aid due to the scale of the incident.

Departments assisting North Whiteville on scene included Brunswick, Whiteville, Chadbourn, White Marsh, Hallsboro, Tabor City, and Williams Township.

Large tanker support was provided by Tabor City and Williams Township, supplying sustained water flow throughout the response. Ladder operations were supported by Brunswick and Hallsboro, allowing crews to access elevated areas and apply water from above.

Additional agencies assisting included the Columbus County 911 Emergency Center, Columbus County Emergency Management Services, the Columbus County Fire Marshal’s Office, and Whiteville Rescue.

North Whiteville VFD expressed appreciation for the coordinated response, noting that incidents of this size require extensive manpower, equipment, and communication across multiple departments and agencies. The department said it is grateful for every unit that responded to assist.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Columbus County Fire Marshal’s Office.
