Light water flow and quick teamwork help bring frightened kitten to safety
On Saturday, May 16, 2026, at approximately 5:00 p.m., Winnabow Engine 4 – staffed by Lieutenant Butchello and Firefighters Reshetar, Shepherd, Woodring, and B. Jones was dispatched to an animal rescue with a storybook ending.

Upon arrival, concerned residents directed the crew to a storm drain where a baby kitten was trapped between two grates beneath the roadway. Crews positioned themselves at both access points in case the kitten attempted to move deeper into the drain line. At the first grate, Engine 4 applied a light stream of water while Firefighter Shepherd used some well‑timed cat‑calling encouragement. The combination worked, and the kitten ran directly into Firefighter Shepherd’s hands.
After a local resident loaned a carrier, Engine 4 returned to the station, where one of the members provided the kitten with immediate shelter and food. Firefighter Shepherd has already requested visiting rights.
Moments like this show how our first responders strengthen the fabric of Brunswick County one act of kindness at a time.
