Brunswick Commissioners Move Forward on Fire Fee Increases and Infrastructure Expansion

BOLIVIA, NC — The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners met Monday afternoon to address several key items regarding public safety funding, departmental growth, and critical utility infrastructure.

The session, held on May 4, resulted in significant movement on local fire service funding and multi-million-dollar wastewater improvements.

Fire Fee Cap Increases Proposed in a 4-1 vote, the Board ratified a resolution directed to the North Carolina General Assembly requesting an increase in fire fee caps. The proposal seeks to raise existing caps by 50%, with a built-in limitation that would prevent more than a 25% increase during the 2026-2027 fiscal year. Commissioners Cooke, Forte, Thompson, and Williams supported the measure, while Commissioner Sykes cast the lone dissenting vote.

Engineering Department Expansion: Citing a steady rise in regional development and workload, the Board unanimously approved the addition of two new full-time Engineering Inspector positions to the county staff.

Southport Wastewater Rehabilitation: The Board moved forward with a major utility project, unanimously approving a $5,555,295 contract with T.A. Loving Company. The project involves the evaluation and rehabilitation of the Southport wastewater system, funded through North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) ARPA grants and loans.

The next regular meeting of the Brunswick County Board of Commissioners is scheduled for Monday, May 18, at 6:00 p.m.
